Suborder CAMBALIDEA Cook, 1895
Introduction
Cambalidea is one of three suborders currently recognised in Spirostreptida, and is one of two so far recorded from Australia. To quote Hoffman (1980: 82), "The systematics of this group are, and will for a long time remain, in a state of particular confusion owing to (1) a general scarcity of material, as most cambalids are tropical, (2) many of the earlier recognised genera and species being very inadequately documented, (3) the lack of any attempt whatsoever to achieve a classification using modern systematic concepts, and (4) establishment of supraspecific categories upon characters of unproven systematic value". Cambalidea includes four families (Shelley 2003), only one of which occurs in Australia.
