Genus Bryobia Koch, 1835

Introduction

Five species of Bryobia are presently recognised in Australia. All appear to be pests of crop plants, but their close morphological similarity means that they have sometimes been misidentified, and they are often not distinguished in studies of their importance as pests (e.g. Arthur et al., 2008, 2010, 2011). These species are thelytokous, which further complicates the question of species identification (Ros et al., 2008).

The identity of some early records of Bryobia can not be determined with any certainty. For example, the records of Froggatt (1921) (Bryobia speciosa and Bryobia pratensis), Newman (1920) (Bryobia pratense) and Tryon (1889) (Bryobia speciosa) are only assumed to be correct, and their listings here are based on Migeon & Dorkeld (2010).

In addition to the named species listed here, unidentified species of Bryobia have been reported from Australia many times, for example by Schicha (1975, 1984).
