Genus Bilbilicallia Jacobi, 1928

Compiler and date details

18 April 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This genus is quite similar to Lipocallia Kirkaldy and an examination of generic level features of the male and female genitalia is needed to determine the status of these two genera. If they prove to be synonyms, Lipocallia will have priority. Bilbilicallia was created for three species of pebblebugs from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, although B. bifasciata was based on "Zahlreiche Exemplare von verschiednen Fundorten" (= numerous specimens from various localities) which means that a hunt through NRS in Sweden and other European museums known to house Jacobi material will be necessary to determine the type series. The known species all appear to be flightless with the hind wings lacking or reduced to small lobes. The forewings, or tegmina, are hemispherical and wrapped around the body. This may be an adaptation to retain moisture in an arid environment. Three of the four described species are from NW Western Australia and additional species appear to be present on Barrow Island and in other parts of the region.
