- Bazinga Gershwin, L. & Davie, P.J.F. 2013. A remarkable new jellyfish (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) from coastal Australia, representing a new suborder within the Rhizostomeae. Memoirs of the Queensland Museum - Nature 56(2): 625–630 [Date published 30 June] [626].
Type species:
Bazinga rieki Gershwin & Davie, 2013 by original designation.
Introduction
Bazinga was named in part in reference to the character Dr Sheldon Cooper on television's Big Bang Theory, who uses the word 'bazinga' to mean "ha ha, fooled you!". This delightful little species has fooled everyone, essentially hiding in plain sight while masquerading as a juvenile of others. The other reason for the name Bazinga is the evenly spaced, parallel radial canals, which resemble the strings of the seven-string harp of the same name.
