Introduction
The Batrisitae are primarily found in tropical regions, and with the seven genera described here this supertribe holds 215 genera. Only a few of the Batrisitae genera are found in northern or southern temperate areas. Two tribes are recognized: the Amauropini (12 genera; =Amauropsini, see Newton & Thayer 1992) found in circum-Mediterranean Europe and eastern North America, and the largely circumtropical Batrisini holding 203 genera (Chandler 2001: 254).
Diagnosis
Head lacking median gular ridge, frequently with median gular sulcus; first antennomeres dorsally and ventrally emarginate at apices. Abdomen often with lateral margins rounded, then with tergites, paratergites and sternites completely to partially fused, paratergal lines often indicated by carinae at base of visible tergite 1 (IV), some genera with paratergal lines fully indicated but are usually inflexible; visible sternites 1-2 (III-IV) fused, basolateral sulci of 2 (IV) shallow to lacking; 1 (III) with base produced as medial tubercle, tubercle acting as locking mechanism to thorax by fitting into notch beneath apex of metasternum. Metacoxae strongly projecting at point of articulation with metatrochanters. Meso- and metatrochanters with angle of articulation to femora acute, dorsal extension of femora close to coxal articulations with trochanters; tarsal claws unequal, with posterior claws setiform; first tarsomeres short, second and third tarsomeres elongate, usually subequal in length or second tarsomeres longest; metacoxae narrowly to moderately separated. Aedeagus asymmetric, elongate paramere(s) often fused to median lobe, one or both parameres may be fused or lost; articulated dorsal armature often present, armature apparently derived from internal sac; dorsal apex open, dorsal diaphragm rarely present.
