Species Batracomorphus pelias (Kirkaldy, 1906)

Compiler and date details

13 September 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Knight (1983) referred to a "holotype" female but no holotype exists. As explained by Medler (1987), the Kirkaldy type material in BPBM includes specimens bearing a holotype and a paratype labels but these are invalid since Kirkaldy did not designate primary types for any of his species except the occasional holotype by monotypy. Since these labels have not been validated by publication, they have no status and any male which can be identified as being a syntype is available for lectotype designation. Kirkaldy (1906) indicates that the syntype series of this species includes both males and females so a male syntype is available for designation as lectotype. Knight's (1983) recognition of this species as a nomen dubium is therefore unnecessary.
