Family BALANOTAENIIDAE Mackiewicz & Blair, 1978
Introduction
This small family containing a single genus with two species is restricted to Australia and Papua New Guinea. It is characterised by having both testes and vitellarium within the cortical parenchyma and is notable for the small size of the worms (ca 1 mm) (Mackiewicz 1994). Its hosts are plotosid freshwater fishes from north-eastern Australia.
One of the two species is currently recorded for Australia.
