Type species:
Medusa aurita Linnaeus, 1758 (=Aurelia aurita (Lamarck, 1816)) by designation under Plenary Powers, see Rees, W.J. 1957. Proposed validation under the plenary powers of the generic name 'Aurelia' Lamarck 1816 (class Scyphozoa). Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 13(1957–1958): 26–28; support on pp. 103, 153, 199 [26] (Validated by Rees, 1957.).

Cosmopolitan.
Diagnosis
Ulmariidae with umbrella margin divided by eight or sixteen marginal clefts; with small marginal tentacles and lappet-like structures arising from exumbrella slightly above umbrella margin; with four unbranched oral arms; with simple and branched radial canals with little or much anastomosing; with ring canal; with subgenital pits.

A key to the eastern North Pacific forms of Aurelia was given by Gershwin (2001: 115).
