States

New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia


Extra Distribution Information

Reported in southern Australian waters by Stiasny (1931b) and Southcott (1982), and by Kramp & Blanner (1972) off northern NSW. It has further been taken from waters off southeastern Tasmania, the Great Australian Bight, and north of Dampier (Gershwin, unpublished notes). "Cosmopolitan in the deep waters of the oceans", according to Kramp & Blanner (1972: 163).


Ecological Descriptors

Carnivorous, marine, mesopelagic, planktonic.

 

Diagnosis

Atolla with large umbrella (up to 10cm in diameter). Tentacles usually 22. Radial septa divergent centripetally, extending beyond margin of coronal muscle. Mature gonads auriform in 4 adjoining pairs. Pedalia without papillae.
