Subfamily Athelginae Codreanu & Codreanu, 1956

Introduction

Members of this subfamily are mostly parasites of hermit crabs (family Diogenidae) but one example is known from a lithodid king crab (Markham 1994).

 

Diagnosis

Female: Body nearly symmetrical; head deeply set into pereon, occasionally obliterating centre of first pereomere; pereomeres distinct dorsally; brood pouch formed by symmetrical free oostegites of both sides; pereopods present displaced to dorsal surface; 5 pleomeres more or less fused, with or without lateral plates; 4 or 5 pairs of pleopods, biramous; uropods variously developed. Male: Body at least twice as long as broad; head and pereomere 1 separate to fully fused, all other pereomeres separate; no midventral tubercles; pleon fused, without appendages.
