Note

Three other forms of Artemia have been described from Australia. King (1855) described Artemia proxima from salt ponds at Newington, Sydney; Henry (1924) synonymised it with Artemia salina Linnaeus, the name given to most species of Artemia at the time. There are no types and Kings' description and drawings are too vague to know what species he was referring to. Almost certainly though it was an introduced Artemia, as no native species of Artemia or Parartemia have ever been known for eastern NSW. Sayce (1903) described two further species, one A. australis from Glenelg, SA, and another, A. westraliensis from Lake Aurean (= L. Annean?; see Timms 2002), Murchinson district, WA. Geddes (1979) believes both are misidentifications of Parartemia. Extant material of A. australis (SAM syntypes C4227) and A. westraliensis (NVM syntypes J205) needs to be checked.
