Papilio hyperbius Linnaeus, C. 1763. Centuria Insectorum, Proposuit Boas Johansson. In, Amoenitates Academicae. Laurentii Salvii, Holmiae Vol. 6(121). 384–415 pp. [408] [Linnaeus, C. 1767. Systema Naturae per regna tria naturae, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentis, synonymis, locis. Edition XII, reformata. Holmiae : Laurentii Salvii Vol. 1 Pt 2 1327 pp. (785) proposed the alternative name Papilio niphe as hyperbius had been used for a Satyrid species in 1764; Clerck, C. 1765. Icones Insectorum Rariorum. Vol. 3 (supplementary plates 4–10). (pl. 4, fig. 1) illustrated the type specimen as niphe; see Corbet, A.S. 1941. The Linnaean names of Indo-Australian Rhopalocera. Pts 1, 2. Proceedings of the Royal Entomological Society of London B 10: 8–27 [23] discussed history; Hemming, F. 1967. The generic names of the butterflies and their type-species (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera). Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Entomology Suppl. 9: 1–509 [293] discussed history of name].
Type data: lectotype LS *; Linnaeus in the original description did not indicate the number of specimens he described.
Subsequent designation: Corbet, A.S. 1941. The Linnaean names of Indo-Australian Rhopalocera. Pts 1, 2. Proceedings of the Royal Entomological Society of London B 10: 8–27 [23] (referred to a type, discussed whereabouts of type specimen, designated the illustration by Clerck as the lectotype and stated that the specimen from which the illustration came was in the Linnaean collection); Parsons, M.J. 1998. The Butterflies of Papua New Guinea; their systematics and biology. San Diego : Academic Press 736 pp. [632] (referred to a holotype, gave sex and repository); Edwards, E.D., Newland, J. & Regan, L. 2001. Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea, Papilionoidea. Type locality: Canton, China (China designated in original description), see Corbet, A.S. 1949. The Linnaean names of Indo-Australian Rhopalocera. Pt 7. Summary of determinations. Proceedings of the Royal Entomological Society of London B 18: 191–199 [196, 199] (gave type locality as Canton, China).
