Extra Distribution Information

Cosmopolitan, including India, Pakistan, Middle East, Europe, North Africa, South Africa, South America, Central America, the USA including Hawaii, Canada, Japan, China, Taiwan, New Zealand, east Atlantic islands and Saint Helena Island, Iceland and Greenland. In Taiwan, it is a rare introduced species recorded at only a few localities.

Distribution References

Diagnosis

External characters. Length 35-200 mm, clitellum width 3.5-4 mm, segment number 117-246. Prostomium epilobous. Setae lumbricine. First dorsal pore 6/7-14/15. Clitellum 27,28,29,30-34,35, saddle-shaped. Spermathecal pores two pairs in 9/10/11, lateral in cd lines. Female pores paired in 14, lateral to seta b, small slits. Male pores paired in 15, large slits, between setae b and c. Tubercula pubertatis in bc in 31 and 33, interrupted in 32, as two pairs of protuberances. Genital tumescences around ab in 9-11, 27, 30, 32-34,35. Live specimens pink to light brownish red, clitellum darker.

Internal characters. Septa 5/6-9/10 slightly thickened. Gizzard in 17. Calciferous glands paired in 10. Intestine enlarged from 20. Typhlosole from 21-24. Hearts in 6-11. Spermathecae two pairs in 10 and 11, round, small. Nephridia holoic. Ovaries in 13. Testes two pairs in 10 and 11. Seminal vesicles paired in 9-12. Prostate glands absent.

General

Aporrectodea caliginosa contains four subspecies ( A. caliginosa caliginosa and A. caliginosa alternisetosa, A. caliginosa meridionalis and A. caliginosa obscuricola) and while the species has been recorded in Australia, the specimens have rarely been assigned to a subspecies.
