Introduction
Pers comm. Hodda, M. (2007) 'This genus consists of a large number of poorly-defined species. These records are all tentative because the definition of the genus is uncertain at present. Records of "Aphelenchoides sp." may represent:1) undescribed species, of which there are almost certainly several in Australia; or 2) known species which could not be identified to species for various reasons. Within the genus, there are some cosmopolitan species, and some species with restricted distributions, so for quarantine purposes we cannot say whether anything listed as "Aphelenchoides sp" will occur outside Australia as well as inside or not. The same applies to "Aphelenchoides sp" from outside Australia: we cannot say whether it also occurs within Australia or not. The genus contains some species considered to be economic pests, and some considered benign, so it is impossible to tell whether an "Aphelenchoides sp." for either reason #1 or #2 will be harmful or not.'
Several potential undescribed species may exist, including "Aphelenchoides sp. e" of Hodda et al. (1998) reported from NSW, associated with Triticum aestivum L. [POACEAE] wheat, and "Aphelenchoides sp." of Davies (2011) from Phoracantha frass [CERAMBYCIDAE] deposited on slides in the Waite Nematode Collection, The University of Adelaide (WNC 660).
