Wedge Grass-skipper, Wedge Skipper
- Trapezites sphenosema Meyrick, E. & Lower, O. 1902. Revision of the Australian Hesperiadae. Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia 26(2): 38-129 [92] [Lower, O.B. 1911. Revision of the Australian Hesperiadae. Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia 35: 112–172 (143) as first reviser gave priority to Trapezites sphenosema Meyrick & Lower, 1902 over Trapezites paraphaes Meyrick & Lower, 1902].
Type data:
Holotype SAMA 3775 ♂ (Meyrick & Lower in the original description indicated that they described only one specimen), Perth, WA (designated in original description)
Comment: Waterhouse, G.A. 1933. Notes on the type specimens of Hesperiidae (Lepidoptera) in the museums in Australia, with special reference to those in the South Australian Museum. Rec. S. Aust. Mus. 5(1): 49–62 [51] gave type specimen information, and subsequently identified the holotype as a male; Waterhouse, G.A. 1937. Australian Hesperiidae. VII. Notes on the types and type localities. Proc. Linn. Soc. N.S.W. 62(3–4): 107–125 [114] (further type information). - Trapezites paraphaes Meyrick, E. & Lower, O. 1902. Revision of the Australian Hesperiadae. Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia 26(2): 38-129 [93].
Type data:
Lectotype whereabouts unknown ♀, Perth and King Georges Sound, WA (designated in original description)
Comment: Meyrick & Lower in the original description described a female in the Lower collection and a male in the Waterhouse collection; the primary description was of the female but the ways in which the male differed from it were also described, so strictly there were two syntypes.Subsequent designation references:
Lower, O.B. 1911. Revision of the Australian Hesperiadae. Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia 35: 112-172 [143] (mentioned types of both paraphaes and sphenosema together, but this cannot be a lectotype designation as it is not individual); Waterhouse, G.A. 1933. Notes on the type specimens of Hesperiidae (Lepidoptera) in the museums in Australia, with special reference to those in the South Australian Museum. Records of the South Australian Museum (Adelaide) 5(1): 49-62 [51] (in discussing types in the SAM which incorporated Lower's Collection, stated that the type could not be found); Waterhouse, G.A. 1937. Australian Hesperiidae. VII. Notes on the types and type localities. Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 62(3–4): 107-125 [114] (referred to a holotype which could not be found in SAM); Edwards, E.D., Newland, J. & Regan, L. 2001. Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea, Papilionoidea. In Wells, A. & Houston, W.W.K. Zoological Catalogue of Australia. Vol. 31.6. Melbourne : CSIRO Publishing, Australia. x 615 pp. (if Lower (1911) had had more than one syntype then Waterhouse's reference to a type could not be interpreted as a lectotype designation because no syntype was distinguished from another, however, because the Lower Collection only contained one syntype then Waterhouse's reference to a type is interpreted as a lectotype designation (Art. 74, ICZN 1985)).
