Genus Ampelisciphotis Pirlot, 1938

Introduction

There are only two described species of Ampelisciphotis. One, Ampelisciphotis podophthalma (J.L. Barnard, 1958) from southern California and the other, Ampelisciphotis tridens Pirlot, 1938, is know from Manipa Island, Indonesia and Madagascar; these are not known or reported from Australian waters.

Specimens of Ampelisciphotis are held in the Australian Museum collections. Alan Myers identified A. tridens from Papua New Guinea. Jerry Barnard identified Ampelisciphotis sp. from Cape Banks, NSW. Steve Keable identified Ampelisciphotis sp. from Twofold Bay, NSW. Jim Lowry identified Ampelisciphotis sp. from Bottle and Glass Rocks, Port Jackson and Botany Bay, NSW and with Rachael Peart identified it from Batemans Bay, NSW (J. Lowry, pers. comm.)
