Family AMEROSEIIDAE Evans, 1961

Introduction

The genera of Ameroseiidae fall into two reasonably well-defined morphological and ecological classes (LIndquist et al. 2009). The genera Ameroseius (including Kleemannia) and Epicriopsis include strongly sclerotised and ornamented species that occur in leaf litter, where they feed on fungi. The genera Afrocypholaelaps, Hattena, Brontispalaelaps and Neocypholaelaps are less strongly sclerotised and ornamented, and occur in flowers, where they are phoretic on pollinators such as birds, bees, and other insects, and feed on pollen and nectar. The Australian fauna includes 11 known species in six genera, as revised by Halliday (1997), and the species associated with bees were reviewed by Walter et al. (2002). Beaulieu & Weeks (2007) reviewed the state of knowledge and ecological significance of this group in Australia. Lowry (1980), Beaulieu et al. (2010) and Proctor et al. (2011) reported unidentified species of Ameroseiidae.
