Introduction
The name Apis zonata Linnaeus, 1758 has frequently been applied to Australian species, either under Anthophora or Amegilla, and has appeared in checklists long after Cockerell’s (1931) suggestion that its use might be inappropriate.
Now the identity of A. zonata L. has been definitely established by Baker (1996), who provides a revised list of synonyms, and it can be confirmed that A. zonata belongs to the Indo-Malayan fauna and is not present in Australia.
The inclusion and arrangement of species within the subgenera Amegilla (Notomegilla) and Amegilla (Zonamegilla) follows Leijs et al. (2017).
