Species Amblyomma breviscutatum Neumann, 1899

Introduction

Amblyomma breviscutatum was described by Neumann, 1899, page 214, and in the same work, Koch & Neumann described Amblyomma cyprium, on page 219. Santos Dias (1956) showed that these two names are synonymous, and selected breviscutatum as the valid name on the basis of page priority. This would now be interpreted as the action of a First Reviser under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Voltzit & Keirans (2002) also used breviscutatum as the valid name for this species. It was recorded from Australia by Kemp & Wilson (1979) under the name Amblyomma cyprium cyprium.

Species Amblyomma echidnae Roberts, 1953

Introduction

Amblyomma echidnae Roberts, 1953 has sometimes been treated as junior synonym or subspecies of Amblyomma australiense Neumann, 1905 (for example, by Camicas et al. 1998). However it is here treated as a valid species, following Guglielmone et al. (2009)

Species Amblyomma flavomaculatum (Lucas, 1846)

Introduction

Kaufman (1972) found that Aponomma pulchrum Roberts 1953 is a synonym of Amblyomma flavomaculatum, and speculated that it may have been accidentally imported into Australia. Camicas et al. (1998) treated Aponomma pulchrum as a synonym of Aponomma gervaisi, but that proposal has not been confirmed.

Species Amblyomma limbatum Neumann, 1899

Introduction

The reptile tick Amblyomma limbatum has been the subject of a long-term study at research sites near Adelaide. Andrews & Petney (2008) recently identified an isolated population that differed slightly from typical members of this species, and which may represent a separate undescribed species.

Subspecies Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum Koch, 1844

Introduction

Amblyomma triguttatum was divided into four subspecies by Roberts (1962). At that time the nominotypical subspecies A. triguttatum triguttatum was not known from South Australia. Since then, A. triguttatum triguttatum has been reported from Yorke Peninsula (McDiarmid et al. 2000; Waudby et al. 2007) and the mid-north of South Australia (Petney et al. 2008).
