Type species:
Ambitalveolus costelloae Caira & Jensen, 2022 by original designation.
Introduction
This genus currently resolves within the unnamed 'Clade 3' of Caira & Jensen (2017).
Jensen & Bullard (2010) proposed a classification scheme of 15 metacestode types/forms, of which eight were genetically matched to known genera. The form then identified as 'Larval Type X', has been provided the generic identity of Ambitalveolus for Australian specimens by Cutmore et al. (2024), expanded upon the work of Jensen & Bullard (2010), and focused on metacestodes collected from Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, which has provided recognised teleost hosts for the genus.
