Introduction
This subfamily comprises mostly small braconids, which are readily identified by their distinctive outwardly facing mandibles that do not meet in the middle when closed (i.e. exodont condition).
Alysiinae are worldwide in distribution and occur more frequently in damp habitats than in drier regions. Only a small proportion of the Australian species are described (10 spp.), but a revision of the larger of the two tribes, Alysiini, is currently in progress.
All members of the subfamily are endoparasitoids of cyclorrhaphous dipteran larvae, and they are important natural enemies of pest flies, particularly the fruit flies (Tephritidae).
