Extra Ecological Information
Adult a vicious diurnal biter and readily attacks humans, rabbits, birds, sheep, cattle, horses and fowl; adults caught in light and truck traps; major coastal pest in Queensland, New South Wales and more northern areas and also parts of South Australia; variable vector of Wuchereria bancrofti (filariasis) depending on the microfilaria strain; principal vector of non-periodic filariasis in New Caledonia and probably the Loyalty Islands; major vector of Dirofilaria immitis (canine heartworm) and Murray Valley encephalitis, Ross River and Gan Gan arboviruses in coastal areas; isolation of various arboviruses from collections; possible vector of myxomatosis in coastal areas of Australia; larva found in permanent deep pools, freshwater habitats, saline water and temporary, brackish ground pools left in mudflat or marshland depressions by the highest (spring) monthly tides, often associated with areas behind mangroves such as samphire (Salicornia) or saltwater couch (Suaeda) [Chenopodiaceae] flats; for extensive biological information see Lee et al. (1982: 223).
