Ecological Descriptors

Adult: pest, volant.

Larva: aquatic.

Extra Ecological Information

Adult day-biting and readily bites humans and domestic animals; major pest in some inland riverine areas, particularly after floods; able to carry Murray Valley encephalitis virus in laboratory studies; larva found in temporary ground pools and floodwaters in open and forested areas, with or without vegetation, roadside ditches with grassy edges, old irrigation channels overgrown with reeds and muddy water in shallow mining pits with decayed leaves on the bottom.
