Family AXINIDAE Monticelli, 1903

Introduction

The Axinidae Monticelli, 1903 was first recognised at the family level by Unnithan (1957). It included three subfamilies: Axininae Monticelli, 1903, Heteraxininae Unnithan, 1957 and Monaxininae Unnithan, 1957. Price (1962) proposed a new arrangement of the family Axinidae based on the subfamilies: Indocotylinae Tripathi, 1959, Axininae and Axinoidinae Price, 1962. The family Axinidae was also reviewed by Yamaguti (1963), who divided it into six subfamilies: Axininae, Neoaxininae Yamaguti, 1963, Allopseudaxininae Yamaguti, 1963, Heteraxininae, Lintaxininae and Monaxininae. Since publication of Yamaguti's Systema Helminthum (1963) at least 13 additional genera have been added to the family (Jianying et al. 1999).

Members of the Axinidae are characterised as follows: Haptor asymmetrical. Clamps usually of microcotylid type on one side, without accessory sclerites, but completely or considerably reduced on other side. Haptoral or terminal larval anchors present or absent. Testes usually postovarian, exceptionally pre-or paraovarian. Genital atrium and/or cirrus armed or unarmed. Ovary flexed, with distal end directed backward or forward. Eggs filamented. Vagina opening dorsally or laterally. Gill parasites of marine teleosts (Yamaguti 1963).
