Introduction
Asteronychids are found circum-globally in the waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Two genera are known, and one species in each is recorded in Australian waters.
The family is distinguished from others in the order Euryalida by the following combination of character states: no hooklets on the aboral surface of the body; dental plate fragmented into several irregular pieces; acute and spiniform teeth; rudimentary or no ventral arm plates; and on an open groove on the oral side of vertebrae.
