Introduction
The family Aspidodiadematidae includes two extant genera, with species known from the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic oceans. One species in each genus is recorded in Australian waters.
The family is distinguished from others in the order Diadematoida by the following combination of character states: test fragile, ovoid or spherical; primary tubercles perforate, crenulate; primary spines hollow, central lumen divided into a series of compartments by delicate fenestrated plates connected by slender calcareous strands, spines verticilate, with ambitals elongated and curved downward; lantern diadematoid type.
