Family ARMADILLIDIIDAE Brandt, 1833
Introduction
Armadillidiidae are found in litter and under objects on the ground. In Australia, they live in gardens and elsewhere near human habitation, but they also extend into areas of native vegetation. Armadillidiids are Palaearctic isopods introduced to Australia.
Armadillidiidae Brandt, 1833 was placed on the Official List of Family-Group Names in Zoology (ICZN 1998).
Diagnosis
Dorsal surface of body strongly convex; animal can conglobate. Body outline not interrupted between pereon and pleon. Head with raised triangular shield on frons. Eye compound in Armadillidium, of one ommatidium in Eluma. Antenna 2 flagellum with 2 articles. No endolobes on pereon in Armadillidium; posterolateral angle of epimeron 1 cleft in Eluma. Pleopodal lungs present in exopods of pleopods 1 and 2. Telson subquadrangular or subtriangular with apex blunt. Uropod with exopod flattened and occupying space between pleural epimeron 5 and telson.
