Family ARCHEONOTHRIDAE Grandjean, 1954

Introduction

The family Archeonothridae includes five genera and 20 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). Subias (2011) and some other authors place all these genera in the family Acaronychidae. Colloff & Halliday (1998) placed Stomacarus in the Acaronychidae, but this genus is here placed in the Archeonothridae, following Norton & Behan-Pelletier (2009). The Archeonothridae is a Southern Hemisphere family, with species in Australia, South America, and the Subantarctic. The Australian fauna consists of two genera and three identified species that occur in forest litter, where they appear to be omnivorous, feeding on both plant and animal material (Walter & Proctor 1998). Unidentified species have also been recorded in both of the known genera.
