Introduction
The Archasteridae are a small family comprising a single genus from the Indo-Pacific region. Two species are recorded in Australian waters.
Archasterids are superficially like the paxillosid family Astropectinidae but are included in the order Valvatida, being distinguished by the following combination of character states: tube feet with suckered discs; aboral ossicles tabulate and paxilliform, with internal imbricating ridges, arranged in oblique transverse rows on each side of conspicuous carinal series.
