Superfamily APHELENCHOIDEA Fuchs, 1937 (Thorne, 1949)

Introduction

Aphelenchoidea is a small superfamily, compring only 2 monogeneric families, characterised by more than 6 lateral lines, and nerve ring circum oesophageal. Most other characters are highly variable.

Most species are associated with fungi, a few with plants.

Known life cycles are between 5 and 15 days, which may be typical. The duration of the life cycle depends mostly on temperature, but may also depend on food source. Reproduction may be amphimictic or parthenogenetic.

Some members of the superfamily are of known economic importance, as parasites of cultivated mushrooms. Others have been shown to reduce plant yields, but this is thought to be consequent on uncommon circumstances.
