Family ANTROPORIDAE Vigneaux, 1949
Compiler and date details
July 2001 - Dr Philip Bock
Introduction
The family Antroporidae was defined by Vigneaux (1949), but has often been assimilated into the Calloporidae. A recent survey of some species by Tilbrook (1998) has justified the separation of the Antroporidae for three genera, Antropora, Parantropora, and Akatopora.
Antropora was discussed by Cook (1968), who noted that the circumtropical and subtropical species-complex 'A. granulifera' required investigation. A. granulifera was reported from the Great Barrier Reef by Ryland & Hayward (1992), but this material was re-examined by Tilbrook (1998), who separated the new genus and species Parantropora penelope for this material and specimens from Fiji.
Diagnosis
Colony encrusting, unilaminar or multilaminar. Autozooid cryptocyst moderately developed, gymnocyst negligible or absent. Spines absent. Avicularia interzooidal, small, and vicarious, large. Ovicells small, cap-like, endozooidal (After Tilbrook, Hayward & Gordon, 2001)
