Family ANALGIDAE Trouessart & Megnin, 1884
Introduction
The family Analgidae includes 33 genera of mites that occur in the feathers of a wide variety of birds, mostly in the Passeriformes (Gaud & Atyeo 1996; OConnor 2009). Only nine species in six genera are known from Australia, and some of those species have not been reported since their original descriptions more than 50 years ago. Knowledge of the Australian fauna is extremely poor, sometimes based on very limited collections from the skins of Australian birds in European museums. Many more species will be found when the feather mite fauna of Australian birds is surveyed more extensively. One species, Megninia cubitalis, occurs on domestic poultry and can become a pest.
