Introduction
The Amphiuridae are a large cosmopolitan family containing 34 genera and 467 species. Ten genera and 66 species are recorded in the Australian fauna.
Amphiurids are distinguished from other families in the Ophiurida by the following combination of character states: disc covered by fine imbricating scales with or without minute spines; arms inserted ventrally in disc; arm spines conical and stout, usually not depressed; pair of infradental papillae present below the lowest tooth at apex of each jaw; lowest tooth usually wide and square; oral papillae few (oneāfour) on each oral plate.
