Family AMERONOTHRIDAE Vitzthum, 1943

Introduction

In the classification of Schatz et al. (2011), the family Ameronothridae includes nine genera and 42 species world-wide. The family is cosmopolitan, but is very strongly represented in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in the Antarctic and Subantarctic Regions (summarised by Subias 2004, 2011). Many species occur in intertidal habitats, including algae, and other species occur in salt marshes, lichens, and ephemeral rock pools (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The Australian Ameronothridae are poorly known, with only a single identified species. A much more diverse fauna has been reported in the Australian Antarctic Territory and subantarctic islands (Colloff & Halliday 1998). Unidentified Ameronothridae were also reported from Australia by Walter (1995).
