Family AMATHILLOPSIDAE Pirlot, 1934

Introduction

Pirlot (1934) established the family Amathillopsidae, but J.L. Barnard (1967) subsumed it in the Paramphithoidae with a collection of mainly epimeriid-type genera. Barnard and Karaman (1991) subsumed the amathillopsids in the Iphimediidae. Lowry & Myers (2000) presented evidence which indicated that amathillopsids may be part of an expanded epimeriid group. In this catalogue we leave provisionally them as a distinct family.

Maxilla 1 inner plate strongly setose along medial margin. Coxae 1–4 longer than broad, overlapping, coxae 1–3 or 1–4 ventrally acuminate, coxa 1 reduced or not. Gnathopod 1 not sexually dimorphic; subequal to gnathopod 2; simple or subchelate; coxa smaller than coxa 2; carpus subequal to propodus, slightly produced along posterior margin of propodus. Gnathopod 2 not sexually dimorphic; subchelate; coxa smaller than but not hidden by coxa 3; ischium short; carpus short, subequal to propodus, slightly produced along posterior margin of propodus. Pereopod 3 carpus longer than propodus, not produced. Pereopod 4 coxa smaller than or subequal to coxa 3, acuminate ventrally, without posteroventral lobe; carpus subequal to propodus, not produced. Pereopod 5 subequal to pereopod 6; coxa smaller than coxa 4, without posterior lobe; basis slightly expanded or linear, subrectangular, without posteroventral lobe; carpus linear. Pereopod 6 subequal to pereopod 7; basis slightly expanded or linear. Pereopod 7 subequal to pereopod 5; basis slightly expanded or linear. Urosomites 1–3 free; urosomite 1 longer than urosomite 2; carinate. Uropods 1–2 apices of rami without robust setae. Uropod 3 biramous; peduncle short; rami lanceolate; outer ramus subequal to peduncle; inner ramus not apically setose. Telson laminar; emarginate or entire; dorsal and apical robust setae absent.
