Introduction

“Sea anemones” Apart from the absence of calcium carbonate, anemones are anatomically similar to hard corals. Some sea anemones contain zooxanthellae (single celled plants that harness light energy), the presence of which explains the greenish-brown colour of tentacles and the position of anemones in shallow parts of the reef. Anemones can reproduce both sexually and asexually. Anemones may be long-lived, sometimes exceeding 100 years. Many species of anemones have a symbiotic association with anemonefishes and are harvested for the aquarium trade. However the combination of high mortality and a long lifespan makes anemones highly vulnerable to overharvesting. Consulting specialist for this section was Dr. Daphne Fautin
