Introduction
The Acanthasteridae are a small family of only one genus, known from the Indo-Pacific region and Panamic waters. Two species are recorded in Australian waters.
The family is distinguished from others within the order Valvatida by the following combination of character states: arms many; madreporites numerous; pedicellariae upright, two-jawed; skeleton reticulate; interbrachial septa well-developed; ampullae double.
