Introduction

There has long been confusion over which of the two species previously placed in the genus Procelsterna are present in Australia. Peters (1934) recognised seven subspecies of Procelsterna cerulea while Murphy (1936) recognised two distinct species, the larger and paler P. albivitta (Grey Noddy) of the subtropical Pacific, from the smaller and darker P. cerulea (Blue Noddy) of the tropical Pacific north of 25°S. Christidis & Boles (1994) stated at the time that no convincing case could be made for either taxonomic treatment and chose the more widespread name of P. cerulea, a decision they retained after further consideration of the problem in Christidis & Boles (2008). In a molecular study of the genus Procelsterna Cibois et al. (2016) presented evidence for the recognition of the two species as separate, and that they should be placed in the genus Anous. We follow Cibois et al. (2016) in recognising the two species as valid and include Anous albivitta as occurring in Australia (see Christidis & Boles 2008, Cibois et al. (2016) for further information).
