   Holotype ANIC ♀ (coll.: A.L. Tonnoir), Mount Kosciusko, New South Wales.

 

Introduction

This mottled brown species is known from a range of localities in the south east of Australia from the New South Wales north coast to SE Tasmania. A single specimen identified as this species in the J.W. Evans collection from Darwin, Northern Territory needs to be checked since this locality is so remote from the other known distribution of the species. M.M. Stevens (pers. comm. 2005) considers that the species is probably not congeneric with the type species of Macroceps.

Ecological Descriptors

All stages: phloem feeder.

 

Diagnosis

Anterior half of head dark brown mottled with yellow, the posterior half grey mottled with brown and black. Pronotum light brown mottled with dark brown and with a broad median longitudinal black stripe. Scutellum chestnut brown. Tegmen opaque or hyaline with white, brown and black markings, the white markings may form a fascia across the tegmen or be absent; veins with black bars. Thorax ventral surface marked with a pattern of light and dark brown. Legs: front two pairs black, the proximal halves of the front femora pale brown and the distal halves black; hind tibiae and tarsi light brown but for the apices and bases of the spines which are black. Abdomen ventral surface light brown; genital segment dark brown. Length 7 mm. Head width 3 mm (Evans 1937).
