Tribe Eupelicini Sahlberg, 1871

Compiler and date details

1 July 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Formerly regarded as a subfamily, this group was incorporated into the Deltocephalinae by Dietrich & Rakitov (2002) following analyses by Dietrich et al. (2001). The tribe is almost cosmopolitan in distribution, although apparently absent from the Neotropical region, and is divided into three subtribes only one of which, the seed-mimicking Paradorydiina, is found in Australia.

Diagnosis

The narrowly elongate head and tegmina of the insects in the Paradorydiina, the only subtribe of the tribe of Eupelicini found in Australia, make this group easily differentiated from all other Australian leafhoppers except the similarly narrow Cephalelini (Ulopinae). These two groups can be differentiated by the presence of well-developed antennal ledges in Cephalelini, these being absent from Paradorydiina.
