Introduction
Specimens of this species from north-eastern Queensland were initially thought to be Pogonomys mollipilosus (Peters & Doria, 1880) by various authors including Watts & Aslin (1981), Winter (1983), and Mahoney & Richardson (1988). It was treated as P. macrourus (Milne Edwards 1877) by Musser & Carleton (2005) who placed P. mollipilosus as a junior synonym following Dennis & Menzies (1979). However it is now considered to be an undescribed species, see van Dyck & Strahan (2008) and Jackson & Groves (2015). We retain the species here as P. mollipilosus until work is undertaken to confirm its identity.
