Introduction

The tribal classification of the Tropiduchidae was reviewed by Fennah (1982). All the Australian Tropudichinae were included in this tribe which is distributed around the Old World tropics, including the western Pacific. Five species in five genera are recorded in Australia.

Misidentifications

Tropiduchidae: Thaumantia straminea (Distant, 1907) [this species was described from Malaysia and Indonesia by Distant (1907). The Australian record comes from Muir (1927) who states "in 1907 Distant described the Australian Ficarasa straminea", which was later transferred to Thaumantia. Muir's (1927) comment appears to have been a mistake. No other records of the genus are known from Australia, all species being Indonesian or Malaysian]

Diagnosis

Frons unicarinate, sometimes broadly so and sometimes with supplementary incomplete oblique carinae in distal half. Antennae II with microsetae extending to base. Apical segment of rostrum not broader than long. post-tibia with 3 spines laterally. Posterior margin of mesoscutellum angulate. Tegmen macropterous (in all Australian species); a costal area with oblique cross-veins present (in all Australian species); Sc usually emitting an oblique vein to costa before nodal line, but if not, subapical segment of rostrum more than three tiems as long as apical segment or Cu1 not forked before nodal line, and cell Cu1a in membrane long and traversed by only a single cross-vein. Genital styles asymmetrical, fused together at least in basal half and with an obliquely ascending process on one side. First valvula of ovipoisitor with two teeth at most on ventral margin, and at least four teeth on dorsal margin. Third valvula with teeth at apex and 5–11 teeth on ventral margin (Fennah 1982).
