Ecological Descriptors

Marine, neritic, planktonic.

 

Diagnosis

Cyanea with a strongly pink colouration throughout; with a dark cross visible from the top; with sparsely arranged tentacles.

 

Notes

The species was transferred to the genus Stenoptycha by L. Agassiz (1862: 162); valid as Stenoptycha by Haeckel (1880: 525); von Lendenfeld (1884d: 272); and Whitelegge (1889: 196); Dakin & Colefax (1933: 210). However, Mayer (1910: 595) and subsequent authors have regarded Stenoptycha as a synonym of Cyanea.

Mayer (1910: 601) considered C. rosea to be possibly the young of C. annaskala; Kramp (1961: 335) regarded it as doubtful.
