Species Siphonaria bifurcata Reeve, 1856

Miscellaneous Literature Names

  • Siphonaria zelandica Quoy & Gaimard, 1833 [based on misidentification of S. bifurcata as S. zebra].
  • Siphonaria zebra Reeve, 1856 [a misidentification, based on typographical error in original description by Reeve (1856)].

Introduction

This species has been treated as a synonym of S. zelandica by some authors. The text descriptions of S. zebra and S. bifurcata (but not the figures) were transposed in Reeve (1856) and this error was replicated by Hubendick (1945) who commented that S. acmaeoides (= S. zelandica) from Japan, was similar to S. zebra but erroneously referred to the latter as "S. bifurcata". This has led to confusion over the identity of this species and its occurrence in Australia however neither Jenkins (1983) or Dayrat et al. (2014) treat S. bifurcata as a synonym of S. zelandica. We include the species here as valid until a revision of Siphonaria can be completed.
