Genus Symmetrodes Meyrick, 1886

  • Type species:
     Symmetrodes sciocosma Meyrick, 1888 (Watson et al. (1980)states: Symmetrodes was established for one species Lithosia nitens Walker, [1865] 1864, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 31: 231. After his redescription Meyrick added `In this instance I have identified Walker's species from description only, and it is possible I may be mistaken'. The following year Meyrick, 1888, established S. sciocosma as a new species for his misidentification L. nitens Walker sensu Meyrick, 1887, and added `I propose this name for the species which I identified from Walker's description as his Lithosia nitens; having since seen his specimens, I find the identification to be erroneous ...'. This is a case of misidentified type-species which under the Code, Article 70(a), should be referred to the Commission) by monotypy, see Meyrick, E. 1888. Revision of Australian Lepidoptera. II. Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 2-n.s. 2(4): 835-928 [year of publication not confirmed] [920] (Watson et al.
