APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. APC Comment: Wilson, Fl. Austral. 4: 212 (1984) stated that the name K. appressa Benth. was illegitimate because Bentham had included as a syntype one of the two specimens previously cited by Mueller under K. tomentosa (1859). Wilson's interpretation was based on the ICBN (1983). However, according to the present Code (2000) this interpretation is incorrect and Bentham's name is legitimate. The citation should therefore be Maireana appressa (Benth.) Paul G. Wilson (1975). Barker et al. (2005) included the name Kochia tomentosa Benth. in synonymy with Maireana appressa. This is in error, and the name K. tomentosa Benth. does not exist.
