   Syntype(s) BMNH 4♀ adults (the three specimens from Marysville were misidentified as Culex australis Erichson, 1842 by Theobald, F.V. 1901. A Monograph of the Culicidae or Mosquitoes. Mainly compiled from the collections received at the British Museum from various parts of the world in connection with the investigation into the cause of malaria conducted by the Colonial Office and the Royal Society. London : British Museum (Natural History) Vol. II viii 391 pp. [91]), Marysville, VIC and Mount Wellington, TAS.

Adult a vicious biter and attacks humans, sheep and rabbits; larva found in ground pools, water beneath an ice sheet, shallow pools with decayed leaves, temporary water surfaces and deep pools in sparse bush or clearing, moorland and sedgeland country.
