Family CYTHEROMATIDAE Elofson, 1939

Diagnosis

Valves elongate, more or less calcified, both ends rounded in lateral view. Surface of carapace weakly sculptured, sometimes with flat ribs. Marginal zone not uniform within subfamily. Fused zone more or less broad and sometimes with complicated course. Inner margin nearly completely separated from line of concrescence, so that a deep vestibule occurs. Marginal zone different depending on zone of fusion, but never dense. Radial pore canals simple. Hinge rectodont, lophodont or modified pentodont. Antennula 6-segmented, armed only with claws. Respiratory plate of mandibula with 2–4 rays, respiratory plate of maxillula with 1 aberrant ray. In male third thoracopod stronger than others and serves like clasping organ. Caudal ramus with 2 bristles.
