Genus Sphictostethus Kohl, 1884

 

Introduction

The genus was considered a subgenus of Priocnemis by Townes (1957) but raised to generic rank by Harris (1987).

The Australian Sphictostethus fauna currently consists of 2 species, both from Tasmania. Sphictostethus nitidus (Fabricius, 1775) was recorded as occuring in Queensland by Haupt (1937:135) (repeated in Williams, 1947:317), but is found only in New Zealand. Sphictostethus has an austral distribution thoroughout South America, New Zealand and Tasmania.
