  Type data:

   Lectotype MNHP 7150 (according to Mertens, R. 1931. Ablepharus boutonii (Desjardin) und seine geographische Variation. Zoologische Jahrbucher. Jena 61: 63–210 the type series of Scincus plagiocephalus Cocteau is composite, containing representatives of two currently recognised species, Cryptoblepharus plagiocephalus and the extra limital Cryptoblepharus poecilopleurus; in order to fix the name to the taxon to which it had been widely applied, it was necessary to designate as lectotype the MNHP syntype from Shark Bay, WA; because the syntypes are extant (for details, see Guibé, J. 1954. Catalogue des Types de Lézards du Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle. Paris : Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle 119 pp.), the action of Storr, G.M. 1961. Ablepharus boutonii clarus, a new skink from the Esperance District, Western Australia. Western Australian Naturalist 7: 176–178 in restricting the type locality to Swan River, WA was inappropriate), Shark Bay, WA (paralectotypes from Tasmania (in error), Tahiti, Hawaiian Ils and Puña Is., Ecuador).

Introduction

Horner (2007: 114), following a detailed diagnosis, description and discussion, followed Wells & Wellington (1985) in according full species status to C. ruber; thus changing the concept of C. plagiocephalus.
